Toyota Repair: 1990 camry wont shift, 1990 toyota camry, metal particles

Question
I have a 1990 toyota camry with the A140L automatic transmission. it was having trouble shifting from first to second and now it won't shift at all, first and reverse are fine. I've been told there could be a problem with solenoids if so is this something i can repair or does it require a new transmission. The car only has 95000 miles and is in great shape. THANK YOU

Answer
The shift solenoids are rarely the cause, in most cases the solenoids stop working because the get either clutch material or metal particles in them, the transmission oil pan should be removed to inspect for metal particles and/or clutch material which would indicate a transmission replacement is needed.
