Toyota Repair: Transmission Slipping?, tacoma prerunner, metal shavings

Question
Hello,
I have a 1999 Tacoma PreRunner V6 with A/T.  In the past year or so, when I start out first thing in the morning and it is somewhat cold outside, I can feel the transmission "slipping" a bit while it changes between gears (feels like 2nd - 3rd gear to me...).  After it warms up, things are fine.  Also, this doesn't happen all the time, just some days when it's cold outside.

I have had the fluid checked and they said it needed changing - was somewhat burnt they said.  This was the first service I've had for the transmission and the truck has 60K miles.

My question is - Does this sound like the transmission could be getting to ready to go out?  Are there other checks I can do to see the health of it or any preventative measures I might take for this?

Thanks very much!

Answer
Yes it does seem to me that there is a transmission problem developing, the fluid being dark and burned are a good indication of this,I would recommend removing the transmission oil pan for inspection, if there is clutch material or metal shavings in the oil pan it would confirm this.
