Toyota Repair: changing brake pads and rotors, changing brake pads, brake pads and rotors

Question
i am trying to change the brake pads on a 99 tacoma and i don't have a manual. it has been many years since i have done any brakes and I am no failiar with this type of caliper. do i have to take the whole caliper off of the steering knuckle or will the pads come out of the back side of the assembly at that opening? what if i need to change the rotor/disc?

Answer
If the pads only are replaced they can be pulled out of the calipers after removing the retaining pins, then the pistons need to be pushed back in, we normally do this by prying each brake pad back into the caliper, then removing the pads, this way the new pads can be put in. The rotors just pull off the hub, if they stick, some rust penetrant and a hammer will break them loose, the calipers are held on with two 17mm bolts.
