Toyota Repair: Replacement of Timing Belt, power steering pump, timing belt

Question
Hi Ted,
I have a 2004 Corolla LE with about 33,000 miles.  I recently took my car in to a Merchant's Tire shop for an oil change.  When I went to pay, the cashier told me that I needed a new timing belt.  Is there any way to know if this is an accurate assessment?  I only take my car to Merchant's for routine maintenance because I've had trouble with them trying to rip me off (I'm a single female) in the past.  Before purchasing this Toyota when it was brand new, I owned another Corolla for 15 years.  I know that on that particular vehicle I did not replace the timing belt until 75 or 80,000 miles.  If the mechanic is correct this time around, would it be unusual for a timing belt to go so soon?  Thanks so much in advance for whatever advice you can provide.
Deborah

Answer
The 04 Corolla doesn't have a timing belt like the earlier models(up to 1997)from 1998 on they used a timing chain system which should outlast the engine, there is no replacement interval for them. Maybe they meant the accessory drive belt which is external on the front of the engine and drives accessories like the a/c, the power steering pump and alternator.
