Toyota Repair: Sequoia rear hatch, hatch latch, rear hatch

That darn hatch!  I've read about others having the same problem and decided to try and fix it according to the advice.  The hatch is not open; I've got the inside front plastic cover off the hatch, and also have the cable detached from the lever.  I can move the wire inside the cable back and forth and hear the latch moving, but the hatch won't open.  I think in order to fix the hatch latch problem I have to get the hatch open somehow, don't I?  Any advice?  Thanks

Make sure the hatch is not locked, unlock it with the key, try breaking off the remaining plastic part of the handle on the outside, look inside the small opening, look for the release lever, with a small hook grab the release lever and pull it down, it should open.
