Toyota Repair: 91 4runner NO SPARK, salvage yard, toyota parts

Question
I just replaced the fuel pump and thought my problems were over.  She
started idleing cruddy and stalled while idleing.  Took it to my mechanic, fuel
pump was fine, no spark though.  They called me later and said they couldn't
pin point the prblm.  Said they would start with the coil then work their way
to the computer.  I said no thnks and replaced the coil myself.  Still won't
start, turns over but won't fire at all.  What should I move to next, igniter,
distributer...?  Any suggestions would be SO appreciated!!!!!

Answer
The two most likely causes are just that, the distributor or the igniter, try picking up an igniter from a salvage yard, preferably one that specializes in toyota parts only, then see if it solves the problem, if not replace the distributor, doing it this way is still a lot cheaper than having the repair shop try different things and charging you labor. There is not a real reliable way of testing the igniter or distributor, my experience in the past is that even though the ohm readings were within specifactions but the problem pesisting, substituting a known good part for a suspected failed part was the most reliable solution. A more obvious cause may be that the timing belt broke but it is so obvious that I don't see how the mechanic could have missed it, you can double check it yourself, remove the distributor cap and make sure the rotor turns when cranking the engine.
