Toyota Repair: 1990 V6 Camry Engine light, decent shape, toyota dealer

Question
I just purchased this car(decent shape - was looked at/ a gasket is leaking-given oil to add if needed) from a friend for my daughter for college. She drove the car around town this weekend and took off for a 3 hour of highway driving back to school and the engine light turned on 2 block from her apartment(she almost made it). She said it smells like burning plastic. She added a quart of oil. Checked fluids. Light is still on. Problem is... we do not personally know any repair shops their. So I'm trying to see if you can narrow the problem down, so she won't be taken advantage of when she takes it in for repair.

Answer
You know it has an oil leak, the oil is probably leaking on hot engine parts causing the smell. The check engine light can turn on for a number of reasons, it should be taken to a repair shop or the toyota dealer so that they can get the trouble codes from the computer that turned the check engine light on.
