Toyota Repair: faulty gauges??, temp gauge, head gasket

Question
I have just bought an 89 EE90 Corolla, of which had an "over heating problem". A new rad, thermostat, temp switch and temp sender later (the radiator was half missing to start with, so needed replacing), the needle still goes to H very quickly (before the bottom rad hose heats up).
The thermostat was poked also, stuck patly open. I think I have eliminated most things down to the temp gauge. (the water pump is still pumping plenty of water also)
Is it possible to adjust or re calibrate the temp gauge?
Also, the fuel gauge needs doing also, as the fuel light comes on at 1/4 tank, and it is off the gauge when the tank is full.
Lastly, I replaced the fan thermo switch, but the fan still doesnt come one when up to temp, however it does come on when i un plug that plug. Is it possible the its the relay causing the can not to come on?

Many thanks in advance,
James

Answer
Hi, looks like the car needs a lot of work here and there. if heats up fast before thermostat opens, that may be due to air in the system. open rad cap and check for air bubbles when eng running(please do not open when hot may get burns] if bubbles possibly head gasket gone. for gauges it may be electrical connections or corrosion. if air in the system fan may not come on.
I do not understand witch plug you are disconnecting and fan works. Can you explain better please.
