Toyota Repair: Check Engine Light, emission control system, evaporative emission control system

Last year 2006 I went to a dealer for this check engine that cost me $100.00 that included a new gas cap. 9 months later the light came back on and I took it to another mechanic and he told me the same story and he charge me $68.00 to check it out and the light came back on again. I took it to Auto Zone and code was PO446.  I can't afford to pay this amount everytime I need a inspection. I live in Rochester, NY. Please help me !!!

Hi Joyce, P0446 : Evaporative Emission control system Vent control circuit. that is electrical problem. we buy those scanners that are not cheap that's why we charge for hooking it up to the vehicle. But there are some bad people also that take advantage and only take your money without really chasing the problem and fixing it for you. That has to be diagnose properly and fixed. I am independent shop, but i would say you go to dealer just demand to have in writing that they are working on that specific problem and if not fixed properly you do not pay for that again. keep this paperwork in your records.
