Toyota Repair: 84 carola stalling, toyota carola, time ted

I have a 84 Toyota carola auto with idling problems....
car starts fine but as soon as I take my foot off the the gas peddle to reverse the car stalls...this all so happens when I put the car into drive....Iv adjusted the timming many times only to have it reving too fast resulting in a slow gear change..what can I do ? Thanks for your time Ted

It's probably an intake manifold leak or possibly a leak at the carburetor base gasket, get a can of carburetor cleaner and spray it around the base of the carburetor and where the intake manifold attaches to the cylinder head while the engine is idling, if there is an increase in engine speed then there is a leak where the carb cleaner is sprayed.
