Toyota Repair: A/C compressor freezing up, r134 freon, metal shavings

Question
I just bought a 1988 Toyota Pickup, 4WD, with the 3.0 Liter engine.  After using the A/C for a couple of days, it froze up.  When I push the A/C switch, the engine gets sluggish, and the belts smell like they are going to catch fire.  I just gave it a full tune up and while under there I turned on the A/C and when it did spin, I sprayed WD-40 behind the pulley wheel, thinking that that would help keep it lubricated.  But now, it won't even spin.  How do I fix it, and what should I watch out for when taking it apart to replace it, if that is what it needs?
Much Mahalo,

Answer
The a/c compressor has seized up, the compressor and the clutch need to be replaced along with the receiver drier unit. If there are lots of metal shavings in the compressor I would advise replacing the expansion valve also and cleaning out the a/c lines, while in the process of doing this it would be a good idea to buy a retrofit kit that changes the freon over form the R-12 to the R134 freon which is much cheaper and used in all vehicles since 1994.
