Toyota Repair: Starting problems, fuel filter, 4runner

I have a 94 4Runner with a v6 and 148,000 miles.  It won't start when it gets below freezing or close to it and last week the "check engine" light came on for a short while, twice.  Seems to reset when I turn the car off then on again.  I have not changed the fuel filter, yet, since the starting problem arose.

First we need to find out why the check engine light came on, this is a starting point in diagnosing whatever is going on with the engine, have someone retreive any trouble codes that may be in the onboard computer, most major autoparts stores will do this at no charge, then let me know what the codes are.
