Toyota Repair: 2000 Toyota 4Runner ABS & Brake Light Error, trailer wire harness, brake light switch

Question
My husband and I recently noticed our brake lights weren't functioning, so we checked the bulbs (fine), fuses (fine), and changed the brake switch; this had no effect.  Then we noticed that the ABS light was on... could a problem with the ABS cause the brake lights to malfunction as well?  Is this an expensive procedure to repair?  Thanks for your time!

Answer
If all the fuses are good and the brake light switch is new it sounds like there is a wiring problem, a common problem is the trailer wiring if it has a trailer hictch, disconnect the trailer wire harness completely and see if the brake lights now work, if that was the case the abs light may go out or can be reset by removing the EFI fuse for ten secondes. If that doesn't work or the ABS light remains on even after the brake lights work there is a problem with the abs system and it has to be diagnosed by connecting a diagnostic scantool to read the trouble code.
An ABS system malfunction will not cause the brake lights not to work but a brake light failure can cause the abs and the cruise control to be disabled.
