Toyota Repair: 1999 Toyota Sienna CE, clouds of smoke, mr lube

Question
Our Sienna has 161000km now.  At 155000km we had the oil and PCV valve changed at Mr. Lube and the rad flushed.  Immediately after this service our exhaust was emitting large clouds of white and blue smoke when the accelerator was pushed.  We called them and they said to get it in if it continues.  After 2-3 days the clouds of smoke ceased and have been gone until 4 days ago when we had an oil change at Toyota and the problem started again only this time it appears intermitently.  Worse when the car is cold but it can also happen when the car is warm.  It will only last for a few minutes but is definitely coming from the exhaust and is a bluish-white colour.  We brought the van back to Toyota and the service manager saw and smelt the smoke and said it was burnung oil.  They performed a compression test on the top three valves and he said the compression was low in all of them and suggested they would have to take the engine apart to find out exactly what was wrong which he ball-parked at $3000.00 to fix (25hrs. of labour).  Are there any other things I can do to confirm their diagnosis or fix the problem?

Answer
I would recommend having the toyota dealer remove the valve cover to inspect for an oil gelling/sludge condition, if this condition exists toyota has a special policy adjustment (SPA) in effect which will cover the repair at no cost to you, the dealer should be aware of this and there are certain criteria involved that must be met which may include having an FTS specialist come to the dealer to inspect the engine and make recommendations, I'm not saying this is the case I am just making you aware of the possibility.
