Toyota Repair: Toyota RAV4 2002 - engine light coming on 3x, toyota rav4 2002, ted ritter

Question
Hello Brandon, sosrry but Mr. Ritter ask for a followup then would not take my qwuestion, so I am going to another expert - you! (read below)
Toyota RAV4 66,000 mi. 2002 Yr. Codes PO 420, PO 430
Original 1st Question to Ted Ritter: I am a retired lady, so these check engine lights that keep coming on are getting costly for me! Is there a way I can turn it out myself? It has been to repair 2x and it came on again after that and will not pass emissions in this state (ID.) which also cost $15 each. (I'm starting to think it is a computer plan!) Each time it fails I have to take it into dealer or repair, which has been very costly. Last time it had 2 codes.
Any help on this is appreciated. Otherwise, its a good car, no problems but this light! I am handy and could reset myself if I knew how.
Thanks, Happy Holidays

Brandon, I am asking for your help on this as well. Many thanks - Happy New Year!

Answer   Some of the trouble codes can be cleared by disconnecting the battery negative terminal and reconnecting it after ten seconds but keep in mind that clearing the codes does just that, it turns the light off but the problem is still there, I may be able to help if you could let me know what the codes were the last time, depending on what year and how many miles and what the trouble codes are, the repair may actually be covered under the emission control warranty. If you decide to follow up please let me know what yr/model and the mileage and most importantly the trouble codes.

Answer
Well. We set it to only take X amount of questions in a day / how many we can have pending at one time. So I'm sure it wasn't personal. ;) Maybe if we got paid for it we'd unlock it & open the flood gates LoL!

Well hunnie, it depends. I'm just throwing out a guesstimate, but the computer can fault like 500-700 specific things on your car so...
Somethings can go away, and some things you have to fix (Or atleast satisfy why the computer is telling you something is broken!)

The best thing to do is simply fix the thing.

Anytime you have a modenr car have the check engine light come on. Drive somewhere & just get the computer scanned. Write any codes down. (It'll be like P0000)
Autozone's normally od it for free. Alot of parts stores do.

Thats what you should do now. Get the computer scanned & just birng us the codes. I'll look them up for you & we'll go over what the most likely causes are & stuff like that. That way you dont go throwing money into a hole in the ground & you atleast have a gooooooood logical idea of what's going on. :)

Merry Christmas, Happy New Years!

AFA not passing emessions. Move somewhere more south! :D
