Toyota Repair: 1989 Corolla carb to EFI, emission control system, input sensors

Question
Hi Ted,

I have an 89 Corolla LE 4 door with a 5-speed, the 4-AF engine, and just under 100K on it. The car is in really good shape, inside and out. This is the 3rd 89 Corolla i've owned, so i'm very familiar with the model. However, i've always wanted to replace the carb with the fuel injection from the 4-AFE. I believe they use the same engine block and head so installing it shouldn't be a problem. The main concern I have is the wiring, and quite possibly a few other things i'm not aware of. In your opinion, it this possible and, if so, would it be worth the effort?

Thanks very much,

Mark.

Answer
There are a couple of things to consider, the most important is that if you live in a state that has an emission control inspection to renew registration you need to go no further, because engine modifications that alter the emission control system are not allowed, secondly the entire electrical system would have to be converted to the EFI engine which means all the wiring and the computer and all the input sensors from the ecu engine, some of these components will probably have no place to be installed on the carb engine, so to answer your question, NO.
