Toyota Repair: 4 runner wont hold charge after alternator & battery replacement, few more miles, alternator output

Question
Hello Ted, It died on my way to work, just kinda slowed to a stop. I got a jump and it got me a few more miles and died again. I have replaced both battery and alternator due to this problem, but its still will not charge. Another weird thing is that after replacement, the key will not release from the switch (ignition) unless I tale off a battery cable. These problems MUST be related right? Please Advise.

Answer
The only way to be sure that the alternator is charging is to do an alternator output test with the proper equipment, it's possible that the replacement alternator is defective.
Yes the two are related, when the battery is completely dead the shift interlock will not release so it can't be moved out of park and the key won't come out either with brake pedal depressed.
