Toyota Repair: Toyota 4Runner 1990, toyota 4runner, temperature gauge

Question
Hi-  what happens is that the truck will drive fine, then the temperature gauge goes into the red, and will cause it to be unable to hold an idle.  Downshifting causes truck to cut off, definitely stopping kills it.  Was doing it occasionally, now often.  Changed spark plugs, and suspect temp sensor, but can't find where it is.  I also just changed the clutch, but don't suspect a relation to this problem.  I'm planning to change the fuel filter and temp sensor.  Can you help?

Answer
Why are you going to change the sensor?
Does it overheat or is the gauge inncorrect?

take the rad cap off when cool and run it. Put a thermometer in the radiator neck.
What does the thermometer read.
If it is overheating ,then thats why it stalls.
