Toyota Repair: 1991 toyota corolla, 1991 toyota corolla, speedometer cable

Question
speedometer and odometer does not work
Is it a manual cable or some sort of electric problem Also where is it at on the car?
Thanks

Answer
The most common problem would be that the speedometer cable is broken, it comes out of the transmission and goes through the firewall into the passenger compartment to the speedometer, remove the connector at the transmission and see if part of the cable pulls out, if not a qiuck way to check is to attach an electric drill that has a foreward and reverse switch, attach the drill to the end of the cable and rotate it with the drill, try both ways, if the speedo doesn't move cable is probably the problem, if the speedo does move the driven gear inside the transmission may be stripped.
