Toyota Repair: 1989 Camry 4cyl. 3S-FE, Electtrical or Distributor problem., jumper wires, drive belts

Question
Hi: I have an 89 Camry 4cyl. 3S-FE. Within the past month, I have done a major service overhaul on my 228,872 mileage commuter car. It now has a new water pump (which it desperately needed), timing belt (I was told to replace it with the water pump), distributor cap, spark plugs, oil change/filter, fuses, alternator and drive belts. I am about to change the fuel filter as well. The car starts, but loses power when put into drive and the check engine light is on. immediately thought of distributor; I tried to perform the diagnostic test, where you put the jumper wires into the diagnosis box to get a reading; well from what I read in both Chilton and Haynes, the check engine light is supposed to flash to tell you the diagnosis. MINE DOESN'T FLASH AT ALL!! I am really fed up because despite the water pump leak that made me monitor the water constantly, the car was running well prior to all the repairs I have done since. Yes, I did everything myself, except for the water pump and timing belt; I had assistance there. Please tell me if I should rush out and get another distributor, or if it could be something else. Thank you for your time-Kate.

Answer
You need to jump terminals T and E1 in the connector, then turn the key on and count the light flashes.

What makes you jump right to the distributor?
Did it run ok for any lenth of time after the timing belt was changed?
LEAVE THE FUEL FILTER ALONE.
