Toyota Repair: My rear brake bulbs warning light is on., 1989 toyota camry, toyota camry

Question
I have a 1989 Toyota Camry and the rear lights warning light is
on which the manual states a bulb or bulbs are burned out,
however none of them are?  What the deal? Thank BrIan

Answer
There are a few known causes for this, first of all even if all the bulbs appear to be good replace them anyway including the stop light bulb on the rear shelf, in many cases all lights will work but there may be too much resistance in one of the bulbs which will turn the warning light on.
Check all the ground connections on the bulb holders, the white/black wires have ground point connections make sure they are tight.
There may be broken wires inside the electrical harness on the left side trunk hinge, cut the wire harness insulation and check the wires inside all the way to were the enter the passenger compartment.
Finally, check the tail light relay located on the left side inside the trunk, remove the carpeting to find it, these are known to burn out and cause problems.
