Toyota Repair: Camry timing belt, timing chains, cyl engine

Question
Hi Mike,

I have a 97 Camry LE with a 4 cyl. engine, automatic trans., and 68,000 original miles on it (I bought it new).   I know that the old school thinking was that timing chains or belts should be changed when you reach the 60 to 70 thousand mile range.  So I was wondering if that thinking still holds true today?  Should I be looking at getting my timing belt replaced soon ?  And is it a good idea to go ahead and replace the water pump too while I'm at it ? And are there any more parts I should pay special attention to with the mileage being at this point ?   Any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gary in WV

Answer
I would have yhe belt done asap.
Due at 60K miles.
The waterpump would be a good idea as the car is a 97.
CHECK THE IDLER PULLEYS, THE CAM AND OIL PUMP SEALS. SHOULD BE OK, BUT CHECK ANY WAY.

Not ness. to see the dealer, as its any easy belt to do.
labor should be 3-4 hours with the wATER PUMP.
