Toyota Repair: heater, heater hoses, heater core

i have just got a 1988 carolla for my daughter but it looks like the heater hoses are not on right and i can not work it out also when you go from low beam to high beam the head lights turn off

It sounds like someone has bypassed the heater core and just put in a hose, this is probably because the heater core is either leaking or blocked, you can try to restore the hoses to the original location and then check the heater core for a leak, I can send you a picture how the hoses should be connected but I will need an email address.
The headlight problem may be the headlight relay under the hood, also check all the headlight fuses it may be necessary to replace the headlight sitch located in the combination switch.
