Tips on Buying Cars: Purchase of New Car, 2005 toyota corolla, toyota corolla

Question
Hi Ray,

I want to purchase a new car, probably a 2005 Honda Civic sedan or a 2005 Toyota Corolla. I am not in a hurry.  I don't need or want a loan; I can pay cash. I live in the Los Angeles area, zip 91780.

I have no experience buying a new car, so I wonder what you think of my strategy: I contact 10 different dealers, tell them exactly what car I want and the options I want, tell them I don't want financing and will write one check only (incl. all fees and taxes), then have them compete against each other to give me the lowest amount to write on that check.

To me it seems so simple--I could do it all via telephone and internet--which makes me think there is something wrong with my plan. Is there?

Answer
Hey Jim
Your Q really made me smile when you added...makes me think is there is something wrong with my plan...
First shopping on the internet means someone most likely benefits being a third party, unless your dealing with the dealer directly
You are taking the time to get your best deal which i really like
I must tell you at this point dealers selling some cars are working with a $ 100 profit to compete hoping to gain you as a service customer
Forget the phone and the internet...On the phone the salesperson can promise you anything but it still has to be approved by a manager
On the internet...WOW...lay off we are still in the learning stages trying to deal with all those know it all how to get your best deal
Its a simple game, go to one dealership get your best price, go to another offer them $ 500 less...if they let you walk of the property. and i mean getting your credit card back and start walking, then you know your to low...
Remember this about cars...Dealers profit huge on used cars...new cars its all about gain a service customer and volume...
Now if your an average Joe like me and want to save mega bucks, my first choice would be buying a 2005 rental from a major rental co...Go to my website
