Toyota Repair: 1993 Camry Trans., toyota camry, transmission replacement

Question
Hello Mr. Ritter,

I just bought a 1993 Toyota Camry.  The transmission shifts a little hard between 1st and 2nd.  What could be some general problems that would cause that?  Do you think if I changed the fluid or had a shop do a trans flush it would alliviate the problem?  The car has 193,000 miles on it and feels good driving.  There are no leaks, except the trans pan is a little wet with trans fluid.  I think it is coming from the pan seal but haven't had a chance to look under the car yet.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.  Sincerely, Dan

Answer
At this mileage a transflush would probably do more harm than good, there is no doubt in my mind that the transmission is developing a problem, this is probably why the previous owner sold it.
Have you checked the transmission fluid level, is it up to the full mark and if so is it discolored or does it smell burned?
If that's the case there is potential ,trouble and a transmission replacement will become imminent.
