Toyota Repair: 1984 corolla speedometer, speedometer cable, spedometer

Question
my spedometer isnt working, the guy i got it from said the cable is probably loose. how would i go about fixing this? thanks

Answer
Disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission, there is a small piece of the cable that engages into the gear in the transmission at the end of the cable, rotate this cable end , you can attach an electric drill to it and spin it that way, have someone watch the speedometer to see if the needle moves by rotating it, try both foreward and reverse, if the needle won't move at all or if the end piece of the cable can be pulled out then the cable is broken and needs to be replaced, this is the case 90% of the time, if the speedo moves doing this test the the problem is with the drive gear in the transmission.
