Toyota Repair: warm engine dies, mechanical fuel pumps, champ 90

Question
I have a 1987 corolla 1.6 carb. this little car runs like a champ 90% of the time, i can be running down the interstate and it starts acting like it isnt getting any gas at all, then it clears up and it may not do it again for a month, also when the motor is warmed up seems to have a stalling problem once in a while. acts like it isnt getting fuel again, i have replaces filter, tuned up and all the basics. could these be related, maybe a signal generator or a pick up or fuel pump? thanks for your time Mike H

Answer
Mechanical fuel pumps normally do not have an intermittent problem like this, they either work or they fail completely.
I think the problem is carburetor related, my suggestion would be to either overhaul the existing  carburetor or replacing it with a rebuilt one.
