Toyota Repair: toyota celica- idle hanging up, toyota celica gt, toyota celica

Question
I have a 1987 Toyota Celica GT conv.  When I slow down to come to an intersection, sometimes the idle is hanging up at around 2,000 r.p.m's.  Just the slightest blip of the throttle will drop it immediately to where its suppossed to be (650rpm), any ideas on what to look for? This is an intermitant problem, not doing it all the time.  Thanks, Dave

Answer
It sounds like the throttle cable is binding up or the linkage at the throttle body or the throttle plate itself in the body.
But first check to make sure the throttle cable is not adjusted too tight there should be a small amount of movement in the cable without pulling the throttle open.
Try cleaning all the moving parts external to the throttle body and then take off the intake air hose and use a brush and some throttle body cleaner to clean all the carbon out of the throttle body, use this cleaner also to clean the other moving parts, spry some lubricant like WD-40 on the linkage parts, if that doesn't solve the problem the throttle cable has to be replaced.
