Toyota Repair: turbo!!, extra pressure, engine compartment

Question
Hi, i have a problem with my 1991 mr2 2.0 turbo.  Whenever i accelerate i can hear the engine sucking in air, the turbo kicking in and the turbo gauge rises.  but there seems to be no difference in acceleration!!  If however the engine is under a great load, eg driving up a mountain, i can feel the difference when the turbo kicks in. its been like this for a few months now.  Any suggestions would be appriciated
regards
Michael

Answer
check the waiste gate and see if its opening to soon. Its a spring loaded door that lets the extra pressure bleed off. That may be what you hear. Sometimes the hoses in the engine compartment get caracked also as the motor and turbo generate lots of heat.
Check the rubber intake runner for cracks also. When you accel the engine torques and if there is a crack it can suck air.
