Toyota Repair: Toyota Replacement engines, quality workmanship, reman engine

Question
Hi Ted,
I would like to know if you might be able to offer any advice regarding a 22RE replacement engine for a 1993 Toyota 4x4 pick-up?
I am a GM mechanic for over 30 years and can find anything I want for the right price! But these Toyota's are a bit more difficult.
I found many "rebuilders" on line but have no clue of which one's might be reputable dealing with regarding quality, workmanship, and price. Thought you might have some insight there!
Any information would be greatly appreciated! While I would prefer a "crate engine" a good rebuild would be fine with some advice from someone like yourself who works on these things everyday. It's so easy these days to get ripped off it's not even funny!

Answer
Is the original engine rebuildable? If so you may want to consider doing all of the rebuilding except the machine work yourself.
If that's not feasable maybe there is a shop in your area that can supply you with a remanufatured or rebuilt engine, in any case, your'e right, these engines can be somewhat hard to find, one of the reasons this is so is that it was not used in Japan and only exported to the US as far as I know.  There is a short supply of good cores especially since the engine has been out of production since 1990.
You may also consider checking with the Toyota dealer to see what they can offer, the chances of getting are factory reman engine are slim and we used to install the ones from a reliable independent rebuilder. Sorry, can't be of more help on this.
