Toyota Repair: Broken Hood latch/cable, hood latch, toyota echo

Question
The car model is a 2002 Toyota Echo, with approx 90k miles.

The hood latch release no longer works.  When the lever is pulled, nothing happens.

Is there a bypass to open the hood?  

Answer
Make sure the cable is still attached to the release handle under the dash.
Other than that the only way to get the hood open is to try to access the latch from underneath or through the grille by trying to move the release lever with a long screwdriver.
