My tacoma has 139,000 miles on it and the other night i started the truck drove down the block to the stop sign when the valves clattered like the truck was going to stall. It did not stall but began a very rough idle. I pulled out on the street and it was sluggish and the check engine light flashed. My friend put his hand held cpu on it and came up bad egr and 02 sensor reading.I started to remove the old egr when the hoses that connect in the mid of the egr had coolant in them is this ok or do i have a blown head gasket or cracked head? I drove it home that night the idle is not as rough as before but it seems to be miss firing or somthing. after i replaced the egr valve it idles rough with a temporary smooth idle inbetween the rough idle. help me....    I replaced the water pump at 70,000 , battery at 50,000 , plugs every 15,000-20,000, plug wires once, exhaust manifold at about 120,000, fuel filter twice can not think of anything else.  please help ....... again it is a 1999 tacoma reg cab 4x4 man trans 4cyl.

Those hoses are EGR cooler hoses to cool the egr gases, coolant is supposed to be in there.
It would help if you could give me the code numbers that were stored in the computer, this will help me diagnose the real problem.
The check engine light flashing means that there is an extreme engine misfire that can damage the catalityc converter, so it is important to let me know what the trouble codes were or I can't be of any help anymore at all.

thank you, toyota told me the coolant was not supposed to be there and i needed to bring it to them cause they said i had a blown head gasket or cracked head  lol  NOT... should i try new wires first? sorry no code numbers, my friends hand held only flashed symbles to indicate whats wrong.  a bad o2 sensor would not cause missfire right? what might be some possibilities? I need the truck to be fixed asap we need to move by the tenth and i need the truck running. again thank you for your time. could it be a coil pack? how can i eliminate some causes? THANK YOU ...    Last thing does autozones cpu give codes? if so i'll get back with you soon..

Answer
A bad O2 sensor does not cause the misfire it is just reacting to the lean or rich air/fuel ratio that is caused by the misfire, I still have not ruled out the possibility of a leaking valve or head gasket, these engines are known to have both of these problems so before you spend any money on parts that may not fix the problem the basic wellness of the engine needs to be checked.
There are two tests that need to be done before doing anything else, the engine compression on each cylinder needs to be recorded and if ok then I would recommend having a block test done to determine if there are any hydrocarbon gases in the coolant, most well equipped shops can do both for you, it can be done either with chemical block test or with an analizer that can pick up HC( a smog test machine works very well) and that is a more accurate and reliable test.
