Toyota Repair: knocking noise/clanking noise, toyota v6, radiator hose

Question
Hey Ted,
Last night I was driving home, cruising at 65 on the freeway when my engine started to make a flapping/grinding/knocking noise (fairly loud). I pulled over at a gas station and checked the oil level because the pressure gauge was at 25%. The level was fine. The belts outside the engine are intact. At idle, the engine knocks loudly and speeds up with acceleration. When I depress the clutch, the noise seems to dissipate a little. The coolant in the reservoir was boiling. I checked the top radiator hose and it was charged. Anything I can do to diagnose this? This is a 1992 Toyota V6 X-Cab pickup.

Thank you for your time,
Doug

Answer
Since it it also overheating it may be a water pump problem, a failed waterpump can make loud noises but they are mostly a growling noise, there may be something more serious like a connecting rod bearing failure.
There is a serious problem with this engine and I recommend that you have the toyota dealer check it, there are just too many possible problems that could be causing this noise and overheating.
