Toyota Repair: 2000 Tundra low idle, carbon deposits, negative terminal

Question
Ted,

I have a 2000 tundra and the idle is acting up. After being on the highway for while when I'm driving around town it seems ok but after about 20 miles on the highway and I come to a stop the idle drops very low like the truck is going to die. but after about 15 sec or so it climbs back up to normal then around town it's usually fine and only acts up sometimes. Any ideas?

Answer
Yes, this is a common problem, the way to resolve this is to clean the throttle body with a carb/throttle body cleaner, spray the cleaner into the throttle body and scrub all of the carbon deposits inside the throttle body and plate with a small wire brush, this fixes the low idle problem. Sometimes it is necessaray to remove the negative terminal on the battery then reconnect it  and drive it right away, this will reset the idle speed.
