Toyota Repair: 1988 tercel stalling, toyota tercel, toyota owners

Question
Hello Ted,

Thank you for offering your time to help toyota owners.

My 1988 toyota tercel 1.5 12 valve 3 speed auto stalls when you step midway on the pedal. To make the car run you just have to very very lightly step on the pedal. I have replaced the plugs and the air filter and there was some improvement but the car still stalls. It seems like if you when the car starts to stall I just have to let go of the pedal a little and the car recovers and starts accelarating. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Answer
These tercels had some problems with the carburetors which I think may be the problem especially if the idle speed is ok and the problem is off idle, these carburetors can not be repaired, there are no parts available from toyota, you may try to find a carburetor shop that has a rebuilt one available, the other option is to buy one at the dealer which will cost about $1,000. By the way have you tried replacing the distributor cap and rotor and the wires?
