Toyota Repair: 1990 Camry transmission slipping, metal fragments, salvage yard

Question
Ted,  I have a 1990 Camry 4 cyl. automatic with 58,000 miles. The transmission just started slipping from 1st to 2nd gear. From my research, I was wandering if changing the number 2 shift solenoid would solve this problem. I changed the fluid and filter already....it was sort of burnt, but there was really no metal fragments that came out. The car runs great and still looks pretty good....I just cannot afford the 1500.00 to 2000.00 they want to replace it. Do you have any ideas that I could try? Thanks,   Jeff

Answer
A shift solenoid only determines the shift points, if the clutches are slipping and the fluid smells burned the transmission will need to be replaced.
You may want to consider finding a low mileage used one from a salvage yard that specializes in toyota vehicles.
