Toyota Repair: cold idel adjustment, bypass valve, signal value

Question
I replaced the motor in my 1988 4-runner with a 1989 motor(22re). What i have noticed is that when I start it, the idel is at 2000rpm for 3 or 4 min. Is this mormal with this year motor? The 88 22re did not idel this high.

Answer
No this is not normal and there is no difference between the two year model engines, the idle speed when cold is controlled by the ecu water temp sensor located on the thermostat housing, make sure it's connected it sends a temp signal value to the computer which in turn regulates an air bypass valve that is located just under the intake system, make sure that both air bypass hoses are connected to the bypass valve, if all that checks out ok remove the bypass valve and try cleaning it or replace the temp sensor.
