Toyota Repair: Brake and Battery warning lights, price qoute, battery connections

Question
Ted, thank you for your VERY EFFICIENT and TIMELY help. I sent you an update to this dilemma, before checking the e-mails. Sorry. Do you have any idea, how much I am looking to spend? Just some kind of a number would be great. I simply would not want to be told that it takes 5 hrs of labor for this job, when it really maybe takes two. Also, would a rebuilt one be fine? How much would one of those be? Once again, an approximation please. In advance thank you so much.

Last week on Wed on the way to Midas, my brake and battery warning lights came on in my 1991 Corolla. Upon reaching the shop, they were kind enough to clean the battery connections and check the alternator (I was told it was fine). The problem went away. Suddenly yesterday, Fri (9/9) the lights went on again when my wife drove to work. As she continued to drive they went off. On her return trip they only came on when braking, and then also went suddenly away. Do you think it might be the alternator causing this problem after all? In advance thank you for any suggestions you may have.
Answer -
Yes, replace the alternator, even though it may have checked out good at the time the problem is intermittant but will get worse until the alternator totally fails and the engine will run off the battery until it is drained and then the engine will stop running.

Answer
The labor cost is normally 2 hrs. There are remanufactured alternators available from the toyota dealer, they are a little more expensive(about$170.00)than aftermarket, it's ok to use aftermarket, just stay away from the real cheap ones. Contact a local autoparts store for a price qoute.
