Toyota Repair: 4 runner antenna, antenna mast, phillips screws

Question
Hello Ted.  My 95 4 runner antenna makes a horrible noise when I turn the raido on and off. I looked at previous posts and discovered it is probably the antenna mast. I have a new one, and when I removed the old antenna just the metal part came out. The white plastic part with teeth did not come out. Can you please tell me how I can get that part out?
Thanks for providing this service. Have a great day.

Answer
The inner fender panel has to be removed or at least peeled back enough to get to the antenna motor, remove the antenna top nut, remove the 10mm bolt inside the fender, pull the antenna out just far enough to be able to disassemble it, the antenna wire does not come off the antenna.
Remove the phillips screws and the center bolt and nut and the black cover can be removed, take out the plastic rod with the teeth, reassemble the antenna and install it, do not install the top nut, yurn the key on and the radio on and wait until the motor stops then turn the radio off and feed the new antenna into the opening with the teeth facing to the rear, when the gear catches the mast it will pull it in.
