Toyota Repair: 96 Tacoma stuck ignition, lock cylinder, toyota dealer

Question
Hello and thanks for the time.  I have a 1996 Tacoma 4WD with 6 cylinder.  The other day while leaving work the key would not turn even to the ACC position.  After fiddlign with it for a few minutes it turned and started.  Well, today it did the same thing except that fiddling with it for the past 45 minutes has not caused it to turn.  At one point I was really trying hard and now it will turn to the ACC position but will simply not go any further.  Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.  I'm not sure if I need to replace the cylinder or not.  Also, I am rather auto-illiterate so please be detailed.

Thanks again for your time.

Dan

Answer
The first thing I would do is to go to the toyota dealer parts department and have a new key made using the vehicle identification number(VIN#) take identification with you to prove that you are the registered owner, try the new key and see if it works, if not the ignition lock cylinder needs to be replaced, this involves removing the lock cylinder and recoding the new cylinder to work with the original key so that it will work in the ignition and the doors, in your case I would recommend having the toyota dealer take over if the new key doesn't fix the problem.
