Toyota Repair: 1992 Toyota Camry headlight indicator, toyota camry, history of the car

Question
Ok, I just bought this used 1992 Camry.. GREAT shape/condition. I put the headlight switch to the auto setting to where it runns the headlights during the day and shuts off when you open the door. But my father told me that it will ruin the alternator cause it has to work harder to keep it charged.. so i turned it off. Now the headlight indicator comes on and stays on when i put the car in drive, when i first crank it up it isn't on in park but after i put it in drive it stays on. All my lights are working/none out. What is the cause and what can i do about it?

Answer
I'm not real sure what may be the problem here but with all due respect your dad is wrong, almost all newer model cars have DRLs and there is no problem with the alternator going bad.
There may be a problem with the DRL relay, you can try replacing it, if that doesn't help there is a more serious electrical problem which could involve a wiring problem or a possible problem with the integration relay, this is getting into an area where I recommend having a toyota dealer diagnose the problem.
It is also possible that the car was involved in an accident before you bought it and may have wiring harness damage, you can get a history of the car by going online to one of the reporting agencies like carfax.com there is a fee but it may help diagnose the situation and steer you in the right direction.
