Ted thank you for your time in advance.
1989 toyota Cressida 6 cyl. --recent rebuild of head gasket (135,000 miles). finally perged coolant system so it has heat (pain in the a__). Question--what is preventing the seconday (electric) cooling fan from operation? note: 12 volts applied directly to fan motor works. Checked the fuse--is OK. Not sure of which/where sending unit is--or if that in fact is the problem. I am also not hearing /seeing A/C fan start-up---is this related?

Thanks

The second fan will only turn on if the a/c compressor engages, it is an auxillary fan to cool the condensor and is also referred to as the conensor fan, it may be that there is a problem with the a/c system, yes it is related to the interior fan not coming on, the a/c compressor will not turn on if the blower fan in the passenger compartment is not working, is this the case?

Ted--there are two exterior fans--one as you had       stated "condenser" fan and there is also a small 6-7 inch fan that lives behind the radiator. The interior heater/A/C fan does work. When the car is at idle and the clutch fan is engaged this small fan is supposed to come on automatically if the tempature goes beyond the clutch fans ability to maintain tempature. I know it's not working----temp guage was almost redlined before I had the system burped--fan never came on. I have had the car at Toyota three times to get A/C charged--they replace a gasket/seal put some dye in and tell me to come back for dye check--I'm a little tired of it, but I want it fixed. I'm headed to Barnes and Nobles today to order "chiltons Cressida" book--I appreciate your help--If you have further suggestions I still would like to hear back from you. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
I'm beginning to think that the engine has a overheating problem, this model cressida has an engine cooling fan that is belt driven, the small fan is the condenser fan and is only supposed to turn on with the a/c it does not come one if the engine overheats but only when the a/c is turned on.
Find out why the engine is overheating.
