Toyota Repair: 1990 Toyota 4Runner, toyota 4runner, volt amp

Question
Hi! I just found you wen site and I am inpressed! I have a charging system question on a 1990 Toyota 4Runner, V6, 5 speed: the park brake and battery light on the dash stay illuminated. I replaced the alternator twice and checked the 60A fuse, but the battery does not charge. What do the dash lights indicate?

Answer
These lights usually turn on because there is a problem with the charging system, you need to hook up a volt/amp tester to the battery, one that can induce a load on the system with the engine running, the problem may be the battery, it may just not accept a charge, I would try replacing the battery first.
There is a quick test that you can do yourself to see if the alternator and charging system is working, with the engine running disconnect the negative battery terminal on the battery, if the engine keeps running the alternator is good, if the engine dies, the alternator is not working. If the engine keeps running replace the battery.
