Toyota Repair: Steering noise, rubber grommet, auto supply stores

Question
I have a 1999 camry 4 cy. Recently about 3 weeks ago the steering column around the air bag area was making a squeaking noise that sounded like two rubber balloons rubbing each other whenever I turned the steering wheel. Although recently the noise disappeared I nevertheless am still worried it may come back. In addition, I have also been experiencing a rattling sound from the front suspension for about 9 months while driving over minor road irregularities.
(I have read your previous postings on the front rattling noise being attributed to the upper strut mounts. I do intend to replace these.)
Now first do you have any idea what the steering noise squeak might be from or if the two problems are connected. Also do you have a rough ballpark figure on how much it might cost for the squeak noise repair.

Thanks in advance for your invaluable advise.

Mike

Answer
There are two possible sources for the noise, the contact for horn under the steering wheel and the rubber grommet at the bottom where the steering shaft exits through the firewall.
To take care of the upper noise spray some lubricant, like WD-40 into the small gap between the steering wheel and the covers, there is nothing to be concerned about, the contacts get dry and cause the noise, once you get the lubricant in there there noise should stop.
The best way to lube the grommet on the bottom is to get some silicon paste, available at auto supply stores, and get the paste into the contact area between the metal steering shaft and the rubber grommet.
