Toyota Repair: Safety Of Fuel Additives, head gasket problems, fuel additives

Question
Hi Ted,
I have a 1987 Toyota Corolla with carburetor.Milage:187,300.I have had problems with it "flooding out."I changed the spark plugs and wires and that improved it greatly;it runs better. But it would still "flood out" occasionally.I got a bottle of STP carburetor cleaner and put in in a full tank of gas.I went through a half of tank of gas and it seemed to cure the problem.
However,I have heard these fuel additives should be used only once every 3,000 miles because they are very corrosive and can harm head gaskets.
But it does not state that on the label. In fact they recommend use every other fill up.
What do you think? Is there a better way to clean the carb?Thank you for assisting me.

Answer
If adding the fuel additive seemed to solve the problem I wouldn't worry too much, I have not heard anything about the additives causing head gasket problems, the additives are mainly a moisture removing agent and a cleaner that will clean out some of the gum deposits in the carburetor, there is, in my opinion nothing wrong with using the additive, if there is no problem with driveability you can stop using it and try using premium gas for a short time and then switch back to the cheap stuff, if there is a chronic problem, however, the only way to fix it is to either overhaul or replace the carburetor.
