Steering Column Repair: 89 XJ steering column, floor shift, little lever

We had the screws come loose in a column and decided to replace it, once we got everything back together the vehicle will turn on but it acts like its not in park and wont turn over, we messed with the little lever beside the ignition bar but it still don't seem to indicate to the car that it is in either park or neutral. any suggestions?

I'm not sure what you have done yet.  

1) Did you replace the entire column or just repair the looseness in the old one?.  
2) Did you remove the column from the truck?  
3) It is a floor shift with an automatic transmission, correct?

Please address all of these questions and then I can help correct what may be wrong.
