Toyota Repair: 94 Toyota Pickup Overdrive, toyota pickup, toyota dealer

Question
I just bought a 94 Toyota Pickup (4 cyl, automatic, 102K miles).  When I get out on the highway, it won't go into the top gear (overdrive) right away, I have to drive it for a few minutes at 50+ mph before it will shift up.  Is this anything to worry about?

Thanks!

Amy

Answer
There is a temperature sensor that will not let the transmission go into overdrive until the engine temperature gets to a certain point, with the engine cold in the morning it should only take about 1-2 miles of driving and it should go into O/D.
If it doesn't and takes much longer the engine may take too long to warm up and it may be a thermostat problem, it could also be a temp sensor for the computer or a possible transmission problem, try replacing the thermostat and see if that makes an improvement. If not you should have a toyota dealer look at it.
