Toyota Repair: 96 Camry Rear Taillight, brake light switch, light bulbs

Question
Hi Ted

I have a 96 Camry. The problem I am experiencing is that when I turn on my lights, the brake light on the drivers side also comes on and stays on until I turn off the lights. However, the brake lights on the passenger side and in the rear window are functioning properly.

I have replaced all the bulbs, and even the Warning Lamp Failure Sensor in the trunk.

What else should I be checking? The wiring looks good. Is it posible that it is the brake light witch behind brake peddle (though I am spcepticle of this since only the driver's side is malfunctioning).

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Mike H.

Answer
It's not the brake light switch, there are two more things to check, make sure that the bulbs are not mixed up, not only the rear bulbs but the turn signal and park light bulbs in the front.
A common problem is that the wires inside of the small wire harness on the left trunk hinge stretch and break, remove the insulation and check for broken wires all the way into the trunk to the relay.
