Toyota Repair: 1997 toyota ignition key mechanism, toyota corolla, release pin

Question
i have to replace my daughters ignition key mechanism on her 1997 toyota corolla CE. never did one. any advise would be appreciated. thankyou George.

Answer
Remove the plastic covers around the steering column just below the steering wheel, you will need to be able to turn the key to the "ACC" position, I advise that you have the new lock cylinder at hand, it will make the next step easier, there is a release pin, you can see it on the new cylinder, look for it on the lock housing and depress the pin, the cylinder can be pulled out with the key.
The key that comes with the new lock will be different and won't work in the doors or trunk, if you don't mind having this small inconvenience you can leave it at that, if you want to have one key work in all the locks the old key has to be rekeyed to the new lock, this will require either a locksmith or possibly the toyota dealer can do this step for you.
