I recently purchased a 1986 XJ700 (air cooled) & it has been running great, But yesterday I noticed when I really get on it or try to wind it up, around 6000rpm it begins to "flutter" & you can feel it trying to get up into the power band but it can't, I stopped & gradually increased the throttle & reved it to about 7-8000 rpm momentarily & it seemed ok, but when riding or under "load" it flutters & sounds like @#(*! Any help would be great. Also all 4 plugs look good.

Hi Jerry,

The carburetors will need tuned (jetted) to correct the air/fuel mixtures.

Thanks Mark, But what I meant was that for the last few weeks it would wind up to 8000/9000 rpm no problem, then just started with this, could it still be jetting? the only reason I ask again is that it seemed to run great, Then started this "fluttering". Thanks!

Answer
Jerry,

The carb's jetting is probably ok. However, I would check the carbs to ensure that all jets are tightly fastened, and to inspect for obvious problems. It's possible for a jet or needle to vibrate loose and/or fall out of place. This may cause similar problems.

Check the vacuum throttle slide springs. Weak springs may have similar effect. Check service manual for spring free length measurement- if any.

Check for a collasped or pinched fuel or vacuum hose. Weak vacuum hoses may collaspe under vacuum and obstruct flow. Pinched fuel line may not refill float bowls quickly enough under acceleration.

Other than the above, I would need to inspect the XJ.
